How to remove the GPS location from a video
When you film with your phone, it usually saves the exact recording location inside the video – often accurate to a few metres. Send the video as a file and the recipient can see where it was made. Here's how to check for it and remove it.
The quickest way: drop the video into ExifGone, see the location, remove it with one click.
Clean a video now →What data is hidden in a phone video?
Besides picture and sound, MP4 and MOV videos contain a metadata section. Typical entries:
- GPS coordinates of the recording location (iPhone and most Android phones, if the camera has location access)
- Device, e.g. “Apple iPhone 15 Pro” or “samsung SM-S918B”, and the software version
- Date and time of recording
Instagram, TikTok, Facebook and WhatsApp (when sending normally) usually strip this data. It often survives in email attachments, cloud links (iCloud, Google Drive, Dropbox), AirDrop, messengers in “send as file” mode, marketplaces and forums.
How to check whether your video contains a location
- iPhone: open the video in the Photos app and swipe up. If you see a map, the location is saved.
- Android (Google Photos): open the video and swipe up. The location is shown under “Details” if present.
- On a computer: drop the video into ExifGone. If it contains coordinates, a red warning shows the location.
Option 1: Leave out the location on your phone
iPhone
- Open the video in the Photos app and tap Share.
- Tap Options at the top.
- Turn off Location and share.
This only applies to that one share. To stop new videos from getting a location at all: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera → “Never”.
Android
Open the camera app's settings and turn off Location tags or Save location (the name depends on the manufacturer). This only affects new recordings – existing videos keep their location.
Option 2: On your computer with ExifGone
The easiest way to clean videos you've already recorded is in your browser. It works on Windows, macOS and Linux:
- Open exifgone.com.
- Drop in the video (MP4 or MOV). You'll immediately see location, device and date.
- Click Remove metadata and download the clean video.
No upload, no quality loss. ExifGone runs entirely in your browser – the video never leaves your device. Picture and sound are not re-encoded; they stay identical byte for byte. That's why even large videos take seconds. It removes location, device, software and recording time.
Special case: GoPro, dashcams and drones
Action cams, dashcams and some drones don't just store one location – they store a whole GPS track: the position for every second of the ride, in a separate data track inside the video. ExifGone can't remove this track yet. It does detect it and warns you clearly, so you don't wrongly assume the video is clean. On GoPro cameras you can turn GPS off in the camera settings.
Frequently asked questions
Is the video re-compressed when the location is removed?
Not with ExifGone. It only overwrites the metadata section of the file. The actual video data isn't even read.
Does WhatsApp remove the location from videos?
When sending normally, WhatsApp compresses videos and strips the metadata in the process. If you send the video as a document or file, the original file – including the location – is kept.
Can I delete the location afterwards on my iPhone?
In the Photos app, swipe up on a video, tap “Adjust” next to the map and choose “No Location”. Whether the information also disappears from the file depends on how you share the video afterwards. Using “Options → Location off” when sharing is the safe choice.
Which video formats does ExifGone support?
MP4 and MOV – the formats used by iPhones, Android phones and most cameras. Free for up to 10 files at once.
Ready? Check your video – it only takes a few seconds.
